Are Bigger and Brighter Smartphones a Blessing or a Curse?


‘Phubbers’ and ‘patients of phone cancer’ are chasing after new models of smartphones, but it has been proved that these will reduce the rest efficiency of modern people. Manufacturers should show more responsibility and automate ‘bed-time mode’ as protection on what people do at night-time.

We use ‘phubber’ and ‘patients of phone cancer’ to describe vast majority of people who are indulged in the unhealthy but convenient lifestyle brought by smartphones nowadays.


特别是这一类人群在工作以外的娱乐和休息时间也自愿地把自己和手机“捆绑”在一起。
And these people ‘bind’ themselves with cellphones tightly during the rest and recreation time.

We all clearly know the premise we are able to work hard every day is to get a good sleep. However, the temptation from mobile phones of irresistible functions has reduced the rest efficiency of modern people.


一个著名的医生说,智能手机,以及平板电脑和电子阅读器应该拥有一个自动的“睡眠模式”来帮助人们停止这些电子产品对睡眠的影响。
Smartphones, tablets and e-readers should have an automatic "bedtime mode" that stops them disrupting people's sleep, says a leading doctor.


现在的每一款智能手机产品都朝着“越来越蓝,越来越亮,越来越大”的趋势发展,也说明了手机生产商们越来越缺少“责任感”。
Every new model was "bluer and brighter", which suggests that manufacturers of smartphones need to show more "responsibility".


当夜晚来临,光线变暗,人体自身便开始产生出帮助人们入眠的褪黑激素。而某些光的波长,特别是那些处在蓝绿色末端频谱的光,就会扰乱这个诱导睡眠的系统。


As it gets darker in the evening, the body starts to produce the sleep hormone melatonin - which helps people nod off. Certain wavelengths of light, those at the blue-green end of the spectrum, can disrupt the system.


科学事实告诉人们,这些更大,更亮,有较高的清晰对比度,并发出更多蓝光的设备确实在白天很给力,但是长期在夜间使用是非常可怕的。
It concluded that these new bigger, brighter devices of higher levels of contrast, which emit more blue light ‘are great for use in the day, but awful for use at night’.

A reliable data shows that if you are in front of one of these devices at night-time it could prevent you falling asleep by an extra hour."

Some sleep-aware apps had already been designed to reduce blue-green light emissions.And that a bedtime mode could automatically filter out the blue as software such as f.lux already does.

There needed to be more responsibility from manufacturers and the key is to automate it.


医学专家建议:“一味的劝告人们少盯着手机并没有太大的用处,因为这就是我们现在所处的生活环境,而且这些电子产品确实有不错的用途,但是我们真的需要对我们自己在睡觉前的这段时间里增加更多的保护措施。”


Medical experts added: "It's not good enough to say do less and accept this is the world we live in, they're fun devices but we do need some protection on what they do at night-time."
